I turned on the TV this morning, and I heard commentators talking about compression and ignition factors, and I knew I had to get into this sport.
I’m watching F1 for the first time, and I have no idea who to root for. I’m leaning towards Red Bull and Ricciardo, but really don’t know too much.

Manor, have low expectations then when they aren’t dead last you are elated. I was with Wehrlein and his 16th in qualifying.

Ricciardo is always a good choice. I’m also rooting for Grosjean. The Mercedes and Ferrari guys will do fine without your support.

You will enjoy it more if the team you are trying to follow actually gets air time. Expect the race to be between Mercedes and Ferrari with Williams and the Red Bull teams immediately behind them. Haas will also likely get a good bit of coverage as the “new” American team in F1.
/disclaimer I’m a McLaren fan so my priority is:
Mclaren then whomever is beating Mercedes/Ferrari but anything is better than a 2 hour parade.
Edit: Most teams have a social media and web presence you can follow the team and drivers outside of the tv broadcast.

I don’t like either of those makes, and the drivers just kind of seem like assholes.

At least the Ferrari guys can be funny. You should pull up some of the videos of Vettel trolling Nico and Lewis in the press conferences last year.

If spend some time on Youtube looking for the videos you will find Sebastian Vettel is hilarious and Kimi Raikkonen just doesn’t give a shit. They are good guys.

Grosjean is such a nice guy. Also, I will never tire of hearing him say “ass” instead of Haas.

My advice is to just watch a few races and see who you naturally start rooting for.

The thing about F1 temas os that they are companies in a way that it’s more obvious than in other sports. Lots of aquisition and name changes to accommodate sponsors.
So a team called lotus might have started related to lotus cars, then became independent, was sold, had many names, got back to the lotus name, then became Renault. But they have been the same team based out of somewhere in England you have never heard of.
The way I see it, pick a team because you like an aspect of it (hass if you are American, could have been force India in the time if you were Indian, etc, Ferrari if you like to be part of a cult that treats you as shit, etc)
Maybe you like Mercedes cars and want to root for them... For me, I like mclaren cause I like how they still are related to a car a manufacturer, are fairly independent and consistent in what the team is. I also admire red bull for the program they put together.

Toro Rosso, Renault, and Red Bull are all good teams to follow. They have fairly young drivers that can provide some exciting on track battles.

If you want a customer team that’s competitive and isn’t a bunch of assholes, Williams or Haas are good choices. Red Bull will probably end up being the top customer team and while their drivers seem like good dudes, the management is assholes. McLaren is sort of a customer team even though they’re the only Honda squad. Jenson Button is a good dude and Alonso is OK but management is definitely assholes.
As far as OEMs, Ferrari is sort of an underdog since Mercedes has been so far out in front. But Ferrari has more than enough fans and if you’re the kind of person that hates the Yankees and the Patriots, Ferrari and Merc aren’t really for you. Renault is the worst of the OEMs, isn’t really competitive, but the drivers are good dudes.

You aren’t kidding about Red Bull management. I’m worried for Kvyat’s future already and they haven’t even started the second race.

I've watched for almost 3 decades and I don't root for a specific team. They all have their pros and cons. Ok, I rooted for Minardi, but they are no more.

I think Williams is a solid choice. It’s always good to root for a Fin. But I’m pulling for McLaren this year because I like their drivers best.
If American, Haas, because USA USA USA! (Or something)
